Immigration Law
The Supreme Court has ruled that Florida cannot implement its own immigration policy because, according to the Constitution, that is the job of the Federal Government.

And it makes perfect sense.  One state, say Florida, might harshly punish the undocumented while another, paging California, may let everybody in without restraint.

Immigration law is essentially a public safety situation that has morphed into an ideological quest.  Generally speaking, liberals support "humane" policies with few restrictions on foreign nationals, while right-wingers want stringent regulations on who takes up residence in America.

Congress should settle this.  New laws are needed.  You can be humane and disciplined at the same time.  The government has an absolute right to limit entry into the country and to know exactly who is already here.  Thus, migrant registration is a must.  If an undocumented person doesn't register - gone.

But some migrants should get a break. Like the "dreamers"; children who were smuggled into the USA by their irresponsible parents. They are largely innocent of any violations. Congress should help them by passing a specific law providing a pathway to remain here.

But, of course, the Capitol Hill folks want no part of a fair solution.  Might lose them votes.

Epstein File Controversy
This Epstein file controversy is hurting the credibility of the Justice Department and, by extension, the President himself.

On March 17, I discussed the situation with the President in the White House and recommended that a summary of what Justice had learned about the villain be made public.

Both the President and I agreed that all information cannot be put out there because some innocent people had access to Epstein, and their lives could be badly damaged if proper context is lacking.

And we all know the media doesn't care at all about proper context. So, there's danger for anyone whose name pops up connected to Epstein, no matter what happened.

However, Americans should be told exactly what the government knows.  You can redact names.  Attorney General Bondi has an obligation to hold a press conference and answer questions directly. That's what honest government does.

Evil should not be granted any protection. Innocence is entitled to full protection. Ms. Bondi is smart enough to make that determination.

One more thing. President Biden's corrupt Justice Department had the Epstein information for years.  Where are you former AG Merrick Garland?

Anger on the Left
Deep anger is growing in the progressive community as President Trump continues to impose his vision on the country and, indeed, on the world!  Despite angry rhetoric and deceitful presentations by the hate Trump media, the President seems unstoppable.

So, what's a dedicated progressive to do?

Congress is passing Trump's wish list, the Supreme Court is slapping down legal objections, and the American people are in a wait-and-see posture.

Therefore, there are few avenues for progressives to take left-hand turns.

I saw Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer the other day on Long Island.  He looked tired.  At this point, he's the most powerful liberal in the country, but reality is taking its toll on Chuck.  Polls say Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez could beat him in a primary.  Conservatives loathe the Senator.  He looks to be a man without a constituency.

Trump caused that, of course.  He has little use for Schumer, even though they've known each other for decades. The truth is the Senator has been badly beaten by the President.  It is twilight time for the Brooklyn liberal.

And, indeed, for the progressive movement.

The American Party
Welcome to the "American Party!"  Elon Musk is backing a third political organization in the USA, and he has the cash to do it.

The new party is decidedly all about money, cutting back the massive spending coming out of Washington. Musk is correct when he says politicians use tax dollars to amass power.  Just look at Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, who voted for the "big bill" only because the Republicans earmarked big cash for her constituents.

That stuff happens all the time.  They call it "back room deals."

Elon Musk hates that and believes he can reform the decades-old system by energizing a new political movement.  The trouble is, he will not succeed.

The reason is easy. Most voters want, and many actually need, financial help from the feds.  Some of that is fair. Taxpayers fund social security and Medicare, so it's only right that the contract remains in place. Medicaid is essentially charity.  Most voters are okay with the safety net.

So, where exactly is Elon going? Yes, optional spending should be a reform target, but almost every democrat opposes that restraint.  Republicans generally support more responsible spending, but as we see with red-state Alaska, they will take the money as well.

It is expensive to live in America. Taxes are everywhere on everything. Citizens reach retirement facing acute budget decisions.

Most do not want to lose what financial protection they have. And Elon Musk will not change that.

What Sets America Apart
On this day before the Fourth of July, I will prove to you that America is the best country as far as opportunity goes.

The other day, I had lunch with an extremely successful businessman who graduated from the same high school that I did on Long Island.

His father was a chauffeur. Four kids. Very modest upbringing, but dad worked hard and the family got by.

My upbringing was similar.  Levittown, little money coming in.  My father worked for years in a nowhere office job.

But today, my lunch companion and I have prospered despite having few built-in career advantages.  No nepo zone.

America gave us both opportunities to get educated and develop our talents.  Hard work led to good wages and increased responsibilities.  That's the way capitalism is supposed to work.

Today, some younger folks don't believe, but the success pathway remains.  It's a rough road sometimes.  Much easier not to try.  Sell dope. Sponge the system.

As we celebrate 249 years of freedom, I know my success could not have happened anywhere else.  Thank you, Founding Fathers.

Money Purchasing Power
Here's something to ponder.  When the Founding Fathers conceived of a new country that would promote freedom and justice, they envisioned leadership that would pursue those things.  No tyrants need apply.

But Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, and the boys also understood human nature and how awful it can become.  So, they built in controls over presidents and members of Congress.

What the Founders did not anticipate was the potential of money purchasing power. And here we are.

In order to run for national office, a citizen needs hundreds of thousands of dollars, often millions.  For the presidency, billions.

You may have noticed that not one congressional Democrat voted for the Big Bill, that President Trump promoted.

If any Democrat had supported the bill, that person would have been shunned by the party and most likely denied funds for reelection.

Same thing on the Republican side.  Defy President Trump, and you are likely finished.  Donated money will be very difficult to raise.

So, voting one's conscience has been replaced by political survival.  Not the way our system should work.

Is it?
