The Factor Rundown
Factor Special: The War on Terror: The Political Equation.
McCain Blaming Obama for Orlando Atack
Eric began Friday's show with the firestorm surrounding Senator John McCain, who said President Obama and his inaction on ISIS are 'directly responsible' for the Orlando terrorism. Former Obama advisor Nayyera Haq and Republican strategist Adam Goodman reacted to that accusation. "If you want to talk about policy failures," Haq said, "Iraq is not a war that Obama started and I highly doubt that the American public wants to see ground troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. But if that is what McCain is suggesting, he should propose an alternative instead of just blaming Obama." But Goodman contended that Senator McCain has the better side of this argument. "John McCain is a true American hero and he brings a respect into this that the president does not have. From the very beginning of the Obama administration there was a directive to scrub FBI training manuals, they were scrubbed of any references to groups that might be offended in the world of political correctness. One of those terms was 'radical Islamic terrorist,' and if we are not willing to call the threat what it is, we are doing very little to stop it. President Obama's foreign policy has been wavering, tentative, and tepid."
Obama's Syria Policy Criticized
More than 50 U.S. diplomats signed a document that criticized the Obama administration and demanded more air strikes in Syria. Eric spoke about the internal disagreement with foreign policy analysts David Tafuri and Ryan Mauro. "What President Obama is saying," Tafuri stated, "is that we are making progress against ISIS in certain areas. We have taken back territory, we have taken out leaders, and we are making progress on the battlefield in Iraq and Syria. But there is a discrepancy between the president's stated position and the diplomats who are calling for air strikes against Assad in Syria, which is a very interesting development." Mauro contended that the dissident diplomats are correct and agreed with their demand for far more air power. "President Obama is overselling our progress, which allows ISIS to beat expectations. The only way to change that is to hit them so hard in Syria that they wonder why Allah ditched them. If they lose, it's viewed as Allah taking away their blessing, and that's how you fight an ideological war."
Terror in Orlando - The Political Divide
Last Sunday's terrorist attack in Orlando, rather than bring Americans together, seemed to cleave the nation into partisan camps. "There is a stark divide," lamented FNC's Dana Perino. "Some people immediately said there is another terrorist attack, other people said we have to do something about guns. This divide goes all the way up to the top of our leadership and we can't say we will pull together and go forward. If you're a Democrat, you think Americans are dying because Republicans are blocking President Obama's gun control initiatives. If you're a Republican, you think President Obama still doesn't recognize the threat of Islamic terrorism. All Americans want to be safe, but the question is how we get there. The only way we win this war is if we are fighting together. Eric grumbled, "When President Obama mentions guns, it just makes the divide wider."
No Spin Interview with Trump
Eric introduced Bill's Monday interview with Donald Trump, who reacted to the fact that Hillary Clinton finally used the term 'radical Islamism.' "She's doing this," Trump claimed, "because she's afraid of President Obama, who has a lot of power over her future. He could put her in jail. And the only reason she even did this is because I've been pounding her." Trump also declared that he will be better at keeping homosexuals safe. "I'm far better for the gay community than she is. She talks a lot about it, and yet she'll let people in who want to kill people from the gay community. It's the same with women, the radicals want to make women slaves! She wants a 500% increase in people coming in from Syria, who are in many cases radical Islamists." Bill reminded Trump, "Hillary Clinton would vehemently refute the idea that she would ever allow a radical Muslim into this country."
One-on-One with the Speaker of the House
This week Bill also spoke with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who disagrees with his fellow Republican Donald Trump's proposed temporary ban on Muslim immigration. "I actually think that a ban based on religion," Ryan told Bill, "is counter-productive to our efforts to fight terrorism. More importantly, we believe in the First Amendment and freedom of religion. I think there should be a security test where you can properly vet people coming in. It would be based not on religion, but on security. We passed a bill in the House based on security by Harry Reid is filibustering it in the Senate." Ryan also opined on the suggestion that the USA declare war against the jihad. "We should declare war on ISIS and these other groups, but President Obama wants to tie the hands of the military. He will not accept an authorization of military force that does not completely hamstring his successor. We find that unacceptable."
Are Folks Reluctant to Support Trump in Polls?
Donald Trump is trailing Hillary Clinton in most polls, often by double digits, but Trump has implied that some respondents won't tell pollsters that they will vote for him. Eric analyzed that possibility with former Jeb Bush advisor Tim Miller. "This is sad that Donald Trump is coming up with conspiracy theories," Miller began. "Trump spent the entire primaries bragging about his poll numbers, and now all of a sudden the polls are wrong? This is just a crazy theory and Donald Trump has to realize that he will be crushed by Hillary Clinton! His character is too low to be president." Eric reminded Miller, "At one point about ten days ago Donald Trump took the lead against Hillary Clinton."
